She is known for producing sound, willing horses that are eager to do their jobs, while helping non-pro riders succeed in the show pen.

Trainer Experience

Horses have been a central part of Peyton's life for as long as she can remember. Her mother, Becky, sparked her love for the equine industry, and she grew up showing multiple disciplines before focusing on reining. At age 11 she began riding with NRHA Million-Dollar Rider Brandon Brant and later worked for him as an assistant trainer starting in 2021. Over those formative years she absorbed valuable lessons that continue to influence her approach today, alongside guidance from fellow trainer and mentor Shawn Flarida and her older sister, Shelby Guthrie. In early 2025 Peyton launched her own business, Peyton Derr Performance Horses (initially known as Painted Performance Horses), in West Liberty, Ohio. She also maintains a strong interest in the breeding and reproduction side of the industry, drawn to both the genetics of matching sires and dams and the promise of developing new prospects.

Peyton Derr’s Impressive Reining Achievements

Peyton continues to build an impressive show record while pursuing her goals at the highest levels of competition. With six years of experience as a professional trainer, she has established a consistent record of success in ancillary events and continues to deliver strong performances at major competitions. Her recent accomplishments include a score of 219½ at the All-American Quarter Horse Congress, along with competitive performances at prestigious events such as the NRHA Derby and Buckeye Reining Spectacular.

At Peyton Derr Performance Horses, the program centers on building confident, athletic horses through a patient, progressive approach.

• Confidence-Based Training: Peyton prioritizes teaching horses to use their bodies in a positive, athletic way before gradually introducing reining maneuvers as the horse is ready. This foundation makes it easier to work through challenges that arise during training.
• Sound and Happy Horses: Her ultimate goal is to produce horses that remain sound, willing, and eager to perform their jobs every day.
• Non-Pro Coaching: Patience is central to her work with non-professional riders. Helping clients succeed in the show pen is one of the aspects she enjoys most.
• Breeding Interest: Peyton brings enthusiasm for the reproductive side of the industry, focusing on thoughtful pairings and the development of quality prospects.
